The /ai/ sound is a diphthong, which means it glides from one vowel sound to another within the same syllable. It sounds like the "i" in "time" or "ride." This sound is common in many English words and is usually spelled as "i," "y," or "igh."

Tips to Differentiate Between /ai/ and /air/ Sounds

• The /ai/ sound ends with a long "ee" glide, like in "ride" or "light."

• The /air/ sound ends with an "r" sound, like in "chair" or "fair."

• Try to feel the difference in your mouth: /ai/ is more open and moves upward, /air/ has a slight "r" curl of the tongue.
