Objective: Students will identify, read, and write words containing the long /ee/ sound (ee and ea spellings)
Materials: Whiteboard, individual student boards, word cards, decodable reader
Warm-Up: Phonemic Awareness (5-7 minutes)
Start by activating prior knowledge of the /ee/ sound through oral language. Use a fun chant:
"Ee, ee, what do I see? A word with the long /ee/!"
Say words slowly, stretching the vowel: S-ee-d. Have students clap when they hear the /ee/ sound. Use a mix of /ee/ words and distractors: tree, cat, bead, hop, feet, step, dream, flip.
Differentiation Tip: For Tier 2/3 students, pre-teach the word set using picture-word cards before the lesson.
Direct Instruction: The Two /ee/ Spellings (10-12 minutes)
Introduce the two main spelling patterns for the long /ee/ sound:
ee words: tree, see, feet, bee, deep, sleep, green, sweet
ea words: eat, sea, read, dream, beach, clean, leaf, steam
Write both columns on the board. Model reading each word aloud. Underline the vowel pair. Use a memorable anchor: draw a big bee (ee) and a green leaf (ea) as visual reminders.

Guided Practice: Word Sort Activity (12-15 minutes)
Distribute word cards. Students work in pairs to sort words into two columns: ee words and ea words.
Word set: sleep, beach, tree, meal, green, peak, feet, steam, beep, heat, feel, cheap, seed, team, sweet, please, need, deal
After sorting, pairs share their results with the class. Guide a discussion on tricky words (e.g., 'break' — an exception worth noting!).
Independent Practice (10-12 minutes)
Students choose one or both activities:
Option A — Writing: Write 3-4 original sentences using long /ee/ words. Starter prompt: "The green tree is ___"

Write 2 words with the ee spelling and 2 words with the ea spelling
