Grade 3–5 Math Lesson Plan: Understanding Equivalent Fractions with Visual Models

📖 Estimated Reading Time: 6 minutes | ✏️ Just Teach — Free K-5 Resources

Fractions are one of the most challenging — and most rewarding — math concepts for elementary students. When taught with hands-on, visual strategies, third through fifth graders build intuitive number sense that supports algebra and beyond. This free lesson plan guides you through a 50-minute session introducing equivalent fractions using visual models, number lines, and collaborative activities.

📋 Lesson Overview

  • Grade Level: Grade 3 – Grade 5

  • Subject: Mathematics (Fractions)

  • Duration: 50 minutes

  • Standards: Common Core Math 3.NF.A.3, 4.NF.A.1, 5.NF.A.1

  • Materials: Fraction strips, number line posters, fraction circles, graph paper, colored pencils

🎯 Learning Objectives

  1. Understand that equivalent fractions represent the same part of a whole.

  2. Generate equivalent fractions using multiplication and division.

  3. Represent and compare equivalent fractions on a number line.

  4. Apply fraction equivalence to solve real-world problems.

📚 Step-by-Step Lesson Plan

Step 1: Warm-Up — Pizza Problem (8 minutes)

"Sam ate 1/2 of his pizza. Maria ate 2/4 of hers — same-size pizzas! Who ate more, or did they eat the same amount? Draw a picture to prove your answer."

Give students 4 minutes to work independently, then 4 minutes to share with a partner. Their intuitive sense that the amounts are equal opens the door for direct instruction.

Step 2: Direct Instruction — Visual Models (12 minutes)

Using fraction circles and the board, demonstrate: Show 1/2 circle and 2/4 circle side-by-side (same area). Explain that multiplying or dividing both numerator and denominator by the same number creates equivalent fractions. Show 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8 using fraction strips, then plot them on the number line.

Step 3: Guided Practice — Fraction Families (15 minutes)

In groups of 3–4, students receive a Fraction Family recording sheet. Assigned a starting fraction (1/3, 1/4, or 2/5), they generate 4 equivalent fractions, draw visual models for each, and write a real-world scenario using their fraction family.

Step 4: Independent Practice — Worksheet (10 minutes)

Students complete a 10-problem equivalent fractions worksheet including fill-in-the-blank, number line placement, and one word problem.

Step 5: Wrap-Up — Number Talk (5 minutes)

Ask: "Is 3/4 equivalent to 6/8? Prove it two different ways." Invite students to share their reasoning — accept drawings, equations, and verbal explanations. Celebrate multiple correct strategies.

🌟 Differentiation Tips

  • Support: Provide pre-made fraction strips; limit to halves, fourths, and eighths.

  • On Grade Level: Complete all 10 worksheet problems including the word problem.

  • Extension: Explore simplifying fractions to lowest terms and comparing unlike fractions.
